A Journey to Rwanda: Stories of Hope - Friday, May 16th 6:30 pm

Harwood Union High School Students have recently returned from their fourth visit to Rwanda. Hear what these young members of our community are doing to make a difference in a country emerging from the effects of genocide. These student ambassadors will share their experiences which include; a trip to a coffee plantation, craft co-operatives, and Rwandan schools. Included in this event will be a silent auction, highlighting unique Rwandan crafts.

The mission of the Rawandan Educational Program (REP) is to sustain a program that partners their school with Rwandan High Schools for a cultural exchange, offering the opportunity to explore diversity and celebrate commanalities.

The event begins at 6:30 PM on Friday, May 16th at *81 Demeritt Place in Waterbury.

National Train Day - May 10th, 2008

National Train Day is being celebrated across the country on Saturday, May 10th. It was on this date in 1869 that the”golden spike” was driven into the final tie at Promontory Summit, Utah, ceremonially creating the nations first transcontinental railroad. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has reason to celebrate, not only is our company’s Visitor Center located inside our communities beautifully restored 1875 Train Station, we are also Amtrak’s official coffee service from coast to coast! Stop by on Saturday May 10th from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and enjoy live sing-a-long music, family fun and games and lots of Train stories. Amtrak’s Vermonter will be here at 9:26AM, so put on your conductors hat and give them a whistle and a wave as they make their stop in Waterbury! Birdsong & Coffee A Wake Up Call

As part of the Visitor Center event series, there will be a showing of the documentary Birdsong & Coffee A Wake Up Call on Friday, April 11, 2008 beginning at 6:00 p.m.. The documentary will be shown at 81 Demeritt Place, across from Aubuchon Hardware Store.

The documentary will be shown in tribute to Jeanne Fossani, educator, birder, and defender of the environment with all donations going to benefit the North Branch Nature Center. In addition, there will be a silent auction with all proceeds being donated to North Branch Nature Center. After the showing there will be an open discussion and Q & A.

Our visitor center and café is now open every day from 7am to 6pm. (Okay, okay… so we’re closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.)
